Mumbai: A special MCOCA court has rejected the discharge plea of
Zakir Shaikh, alleged member of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM),
which has been held responsible for conducting several blasts across
the country since 2006. Zakir (30) was arrested in September 2008
with four other IM operatives including Mohammad Sadiq Shaikh,
alleged to be one of the co-founders of the outfit.
He had last month approached special MCOCA Judge RG Avachat seeking
to be discharged from the case on the grounds that there was no
evidence against him and that he had been falsely implicated. "There
has been no recovery of weapons or explosives from Zakir. There are
no witnesses against him attributing any role to him in the blasts.
The only thing that the prosecution is relying upon is the
confessional statement of three co-accused, in which Zakir has been
allegedly named," his lawyer Wahab Khan said.
