Demand for Sheila Dikshit's ouster gains momentum

Indraprasth aka New Delhi; Mumbai - The arrest of now suspended
Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi in Commonwealth Games scam has triggered
fresh demands for the ouster of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit,
whose Government has been indicted by the Shunglu Committee report
for massive financial loss in the Games-related city infrastructure
works. The opposition parties -- both BJP and the CPM -- also rued
the delay on the part of investigating agencies in cracking the whip
on the former head of the Games Organising Committee.

The BJP demanded that the loss to public exchequer be recovered by
auctioning the personal properties of those involved in the "loot"
and questioned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's role saying what sort
of an honest man he was, when everybody under him was involved in
corruption.

Dubbing Kalmadi's arrest as "tip of the iceberg", BJP president Nitin
Gadkari asked the CBI to widen the scope of the CWG probe to bring
all Ministries and Government departments concerned under its
purview. "Otherwise, Kalmadi's arrest would be a mere eyewash," he
said.

Stressing on the need for CBI investigating the decisions taken by
the various Cabinet sub-committees, Group of Ministers, Prime
Minister's Office and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Gadkari
said: "The CBI needs to widen its probe and look into the role played
by not just the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC), but
other Ministries and Government departments".

Addressing a news conference here, the BJP president said: "The CBI
is probing the affairs of the OC, but what about misuse (of power)
and corruption in other Ministries?.Kalmadi's budget was just Rs
1,200 crore, what about the others...the total scam is of the order
of Rs 70,000 crore," he said.

In Delhi, seeking Dikshit's resignation, BJP general secretary Vijay
Goel said, "This action is like no action. The arrest is delayed.
Everybody knew what was going on in the CWG preparation. It is time
for action against Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit. She should be arrested
and removed immediately. She can't go scot-free." He also sought
action against former Sports Minister MS Gill, former Urban
Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy and others.

Goel was kicked out of the organising committee for "pointing out
wrongdoings by Kalmadi and Co". He said that Kalmadi and Dikshit were
given sufficient time to loot public wealth, despite people blowing
whistle on their wrongdoings. "Nobody was ready to hear voices of
dissent," he added.

The principal opposition also sought action against officials of the
Central and the State Government's agencies that were involved in
causing loss to exchequer through irregularities in Games-related
works.

Terming the arrest of Suresh Kalmadi in the Commonwealth Games scam
as "belated", the CPI(M) also demanded that the CBI take steps to
lodge cases and "prosecute others responsible for the
irregularities".

"Apart from instances of corruption indulged in by the organising
committee of the CWG, there was large scale misuse of funds for the
Games by other agencies and authorities in the Delhi Government and
the Central Government. Some of these have been enquired into by the
Shunglu Committee," the CPI(M) Politburo said in a statement.

Senior party leader Brinda Karat said the "belated action" of
Kalmadi's arrest was "only a tip of the iceberg". Karat, who is in
Kolkata, said the Shunglu Committee and the Comptroller and Auditor
General (CAG) had in their reports "implicated the Delhi Government
and some departments under Central Ministers".

Karat added, "Therefore, the huge CWG scam is yet another piece of
evidence about the corruption which has proliferated under the
Manmohan Singh Government. The fact that the action is so belated
hardly brings any confidence."
