Salim-Javed can lead Muslims from darkness to light, from Jehad to
patriotism: The editorial reads
The Shiv Sena on Tuesday came out in support of lyricist and Rajya
Sabha MP Javed Akhtar, who is facing threat from hardliners after he
criticised the fatwa issued by Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband
against working Muslim women.
In its mouthpiece 'Saamana', the party on Tuesday showered praise on
Akhtar and his one-time partner in script writing Salim, who together
wrote a number of commercially successful and critically acclaimed
films in the 1970s and 80s.
"Here is a true Muslim," reads the headline of the editorial, which
says Javed has given an apt reply to the fundamentalists in the
community and "respected the sentiments" of Muslim women.
"Both Salim and Javed have always raised voice against fanaticism
among Muslims...Javed has received threats after he commented on the
fatwa and called those issuing it stupid and 'insane', but he is not
the one to be scared by such threats," the editorial said.
"We wish him well in his mission," it said.
The editorial also praises Salim, saying that he and his family are
"completely secular", and reminds the readers that he too had slammed
Muslim clerics for their opposition to 'Vande Mataram' sometime back.
"What are Muslim women supposed to do if they are not to get
education, not to work? Only progressive people like Salim-Javed can
lead Muslims from darkness to light, from
Jehad to patriotism," it said.

'Some people were very outraged by my comments and sent me hate mail
but this person has sent me couple of mails that are threatening,'
Akhtar said.
Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar has received death threats via email after
he apparently called an Islamic cleric ‘insane’ during a television
debate about the fatwa against working women.
Akhtar has informed the police about the messages which told him that
‘your countdown has begun’.
"I started getting a barrage of hate mails post my comments about the
fatwa. They are of the opinion that by opposing the fatwa on Muslim
working women, I am being anti-Islamic. I have informed the police and
they have acted quickly and provided me with security" Akhtar told
PTI.
"These fatwas are not influential. The society does not bother about
it. Some people were very outraged by my comments and sent me hate
mail but this person has sent me couple of mails that are
threatening," Akhtar said.
Islamic seminary Darul Uloom, Deoband had recently issued a fatwa
(religious edict) saying it was un-Islamic for women to work in
offices in proximity with men and decreed that acceptance of their
earnings by a family was against the Sharia.
The Sharia law prohibits proximity of women and men in a workplace,
said a recent fatwa issued by a bench of clerics headed by Chief Mufti
Habib-ur-Rehman.
Akhtar had condemned the fatwa during a discussion on TV following
which the scriptwriter was told to apologise or face strict action.

Guys, we are just blowing this issue out of proportion, the issue is
entirely a matter of faith, people are free to accept/reject or be
indifferent about it. Please dont forget,practising hindus of the
northern region esp UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana etc still have there
womens cover there faces when going in public and consider them to be
"Gharwali" ie raise there kids, care about their parents and immediate
family members and the whole civilisation until the last century was
working on the same concept.So pls geeks of this century shut up and
let people follow their faith.

Who is this Deoband? A set of fundamentalist fanatics? We should not
forget that India is a secular country and it does not mean that we
can tolerate any kind of mad groups talking in public openly.
Organizations like this should be banned and the leaders should be
paraded naked in public. It does not matter which religion you belong
to but such extremes should not be tolerated. Specially a set of
lunatics issuing soem statement - fatwa or whatever. India is
definitley not a islamic state which is what the appointed leaders of
this country should understand. We do not need lunatic groups like
deoband et al who are nothing but a group of scavengers.

This clearly shows how strong and bold muslim fundamentalism in India
is irrespective of the ready made claims of discrimination by hindus.
Bad elements are present in every community but muslims definitly beat
all of them. These threats must be investigated and horrible example
made out of the people who threatened Javed Akhtar.Why he can not
oppose a "fatwa"? This is not Saudi Arabia this is a free democratic
society. Those who want live by "Fatwas" why don;t they go to Saudi or
some other arab country ? Because No one will accept them ! Why can
not a fatwa be issued against those countries than because they are
not following Islam's principle of helping fellow brothers? Why these
fatwas are always issued against values which represent democracy,
freedom and secularism ?

Mumbai:
Lyricist and Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar, who has been given police
protection after he received death threats for allegedly criticising
an Islamic cleric during a TV debate, is being guarded round-the-
clock, police officials confirmed.
Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) Amitabh Gupta said,
“We have provided Akhtar with two armed constables.” When asked how
long he would be given police protection, Gupta said, “It depends on
the inquiries conducted in the case and the conclusions arrived at.
Until then, security will be given.”
Akhtar had received the threat on e-mail after he commented on a fatwa
by Islamic seminary Darul-Uloom-Deoband purportedly saying it was un-
Islamic for women to work in offices in proximity with men and their
family accepting their earnings went against the Sharia.
An email received by Akhtar on May 12 said, “Your countdown has
begun”.
Cyber crime cell officers are conducting an inquiry to trace the
identity of people who sent the mail. Akhtar was unavailable for
comment despite attempts to contact him.
Responding to the whole incident, social activist and secretary of the
Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) Teesta Setalvad said in a
statement, “The CJP stands for basic democratic rights of all
individuals as also of the minority within the minority, women of
ethnic and religious minorities. The right to freedom of movement and
work is a basic right of an individual as also of all Muslim women.
Across the world, millions of Muslim women are visible in the
workplace. In India too, Muslim women are present in all walks of
life. Mr Akhtar has been, as all others on its Board, a part of CJP’s
collective effort for justice to victims and punishment to
perpetrators of the Gujarat 2002 carnage. He has often spoken against
politics of hatred and intimidation. The CJP believes all threats of
violence and aggression are threats to an individual’s liberty and
basic human rights guaranteed under the Indian Constitution.
Intimidation and threats, whether from spokespersons of the so-called
majority or minority, are equally condemnable.”

Organizations like this should be banned and the leaders should be
paraded naked in public. It does not matter which religion you belong
to but such extremes should not be tolerated. Specially a set of
lunatics issuing soem statement - fatwa or whatever. India is
definitley not a islamic state which is what the appointed leaders of
this country should understand. We do not need lunatic groups like
deoband et al who are nothing but a group of scavengers.

This clearly shows how strong and bold muslim fundamentalism in India
is irrespective of the ready made claims of discrimination by hindus.
Bad elements are present in every community but muslims definitly beat
all of them. These threats must be investigated and horrible example
made out of the people who threatened Javed Akhtar.Why he can not
oppose a "fatwa"? This is not Saudi Arabia this is a free democratic
society. Those who want live by "Fatwas" why don;t they go to Saudi or
some other arab country ? Because No one will accept them ! Why can
not a fatwa be issued against those countries than because they are
not following Islam's principle of helping fellow brothers? Why these
fatwas are always issued against values which represent democracy,
freedom and secularism ?

Mumbai:
Lyricist and Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar, who has been given police
protection after he received death threats for allegedly criticising
an Islamic cleric during a TV debate, is being guarded round-the-
clock, police officials confirmed.
Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) Amitabh Gupta said,
“We have provided Akhtar with two armed constables.” When asked how
long he would be given police protection, Gupta said, “It depends on
the inquiries conducted in the case and the conclusions arrived at.
Until then, security will be given.”
Akhtar had received the threat on e-mail after he commented on a fatwa
by Islamic seminary Darul-Uloom-Deoband purportedly saying it was un-
Islamic for women to work in offices in proximity with men and their
family accepting their earnings went against the Sharia.
An email received by Akhtar on May 12 said, “Your countdown has
begun”.
Cyber crime cell officers are conducting an inquiry to trace the
identity of people who sent the mail. Akhtar was unavailable for
comment despite attempts to contact him.
Responding to the whole incident, social activist and secretary of the
Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) Teesta Setalvad said in a
statement, “The CJP stands for basic democratic rights of all
individuals as also of the minority within the minority, women of
ethnic and religious minorities. The right to freedom of movement and
work is a basic right of an individual as also of all Muslim women.
Across the world, millions of Muslim women are visible in the
workplace. In India too, Muslim women are present in all walks of
life. Mr Akhtar has been, as all others on its Board, a part of CJP’s
collective effort for justice to victims and punishment to
perpetrators of the Gujarat 2002 carnage. He has often spoken against
politics of hatred and intimidation. The CJP believes all threats of
violence and aggression are threats to an individual’s liberty and
basic human rights guaranteed under the Indian Constitution.
Intimidation and threats, whether from spokespersons of the so-called
majority or minority, are equally condemnable.”
