Pune - Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Member of
Parliament (MP) Padamsinh Patil and his son Rana Jagjitsinh, former
Maharashtra minister, have been charged with,.kidnapping and
threatening seven directors of Kalamb Agriculture Produces Market
Committee.

The Solapur police have registered an offence against the father-son
duo. Sporadic incidents of violence were reported at Kalamb in
Osmanabad district on Monday when news of the kidnapping spread.

Padamsinh Patil, who was expelled from NCP only to be inducted back
later, represents the Osmanabad Lok Sabha constituency. He is the
prime accused in the murder case of his cousin Pavanraje Nimbalkar,
which is being investigated by the CBI.

Apart from charging Padamsinh and Rana Jagjitsinh, the police
have also registered a case of kidnapping and threatening against
Solapur NCP chief Mahesh Gadekar. Gadekar, however, said the
complaints were politically motivated.

According to the complaint filed with police, seven directors of
Kalamb Agriculture Produces Market Committee (KAPMC) were allegedly
confined to a room in Hotel City Park at Solapur for the past two
days as elections for the chairman and vice-chairman's post of KAPMC
were scheduled for Monday.

The police said that one of the directors managed to escape from the
hotel and approached the Solapur police. He complained that the
directors were forcibly taken to Solapur and were threatened by the
Patils and Gadekar. Soon after, Ravi Gaikwad, Shiv Sena leader from
Osmanabad, rushed to Solapur and filed a police complaint. The
police finally escorted the directors to the voting centers.

Following the news of kidnapping tension prevailed in the small town
of Kalamb. The town observed the bandh, called by all parties, but
Patil supporters stayed away from the bandh. An angry mob even pelted
stones at few places, damaging two state transport buses.
