Indian-American Syndrome: Sid Harth
http://navanavonmilita.wordpress.com/2010/06/09/indian-american-syndrome-sid-harth/
The trouble with Indians in America is that they like to toot their
horns every time the opportunity presents. Not that I am against it.
Good for their souls. Poor rich Indians of America. If one relies on
news available on the internet
you are relying on the India related news version, specially tailored
and targeted to Indians in America. Just look at the advertisements.
They all refer to American or multinational companies dishing products
and services for such Indians.
That means, most of the real news or local news that interests fewer
readers is not presented.
The picture gets murkier, in news categories. Political news in Indian
newspapers, magazines and Indian TV channels can also be read and
searched. Some Indian newspapers can be accessed on their internet
versions. They don't filter news for
Indians in America. Some of them have sections devoted to overseas
Indians, Non Resident Indians. Such news is heavily loaded with
positive news. Crimes committed by NRIs are excluded but their real or
imaginary success stories are highlighted.
That is not criminal. Each newspaper has an editorial policy that
serves them well.
The trouble comes when claims of Indians in America, as per the narrow
definition of particular publication is challenged. Following article
about one Kamala Harris, African-American, not an Indian-American,
shows the Indian-American syndrome.
The article is innocuous. The discussion is devastating.
Kamla Harris wins Democratic nomination for attorney general

Eminent Indian American activist Kamla Harris has won the Democratic
Party nomination for California attorney general, giving her a chance
to become the first woman to hold the office if she emerges victorious
in the November race.
Harris handsomely defeated six other rivals including Facebook
executive Chris Kelly, who had pumped in more than $12 million into
the primary elections held on Tuesday.
Daughter of an Indian mother and African American father, Harris is
currently the San Francisco Attorney General.
She faces Steve Cooley, the Los Angeles District Attorney General, in
the November elections, to replace Democratic Jerry Brown, who is
running for Governor.
If elected, Harris will be the first woman to hold the office of
Attorney General in California.
"We have a lot of work to do before November but we are clear of
purpose, clear of mind. We believe in hard work, but we also believe
that it can be fun work. Let's celebrate tonight," she said in her
victory speech on Tuesday night.
In December 2003, Kamala Harris was elected as the first woman
district attorney in San Francisco's history, and as the first African
American woman and South Asian American woman in California to hold
the office.
She was overwhelmingly reelected to a second term in November 2007.
Born and raised in the East Bay, Kamala is the daughter of Shyamala
Gopalan, a Tamilian breast cancer specialist who traveled to the
United States from Chennai, to pursue her graduate studies at UC
Berkeley.
After attending public schools, her strong commitment to justice and
public service led her to Howard University, America's oldest
historically black university, and then to the University of
California, Hastings College of the Law.
Harris is the recipient of numerous awards.
California's largest legal newspaper, The Daily Journal, designated
Harris as one of the top 75 women litigators in California -- the only
elected official to receive that honour as well as one of the top
100 lawyers in the state.
She was recognised as a 'Woman of Power' by the National Urban League
and received the Thurgood Marshall Award from the National Black
Prosecutors Association.
She has been featured on the Oprah [ Images ] Show and in Newsweek as
one of "America's 20 Most Powerful Women".
She was selected as one of 24 elected leaders from throughout the
country to serve as a Rodel Fellow with the Aspen Institute.
Additionally, Harris was elected to the board of directors of the
California District Attorneys Association and is a vice president of
the National District Attorney's Association.

If her father is an African American, she is an African American, not
an Indian American. Otherwise her father should have been Indian, or
should have had Indian citizenship or atleast she should have been
born in India. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi are called Indians because
their father is an Indian. Same applies everywhere.
Am not taking off her achievements, but just stating her fact. If she
does something good for the Indian Americans, good for the people.
Thats all.

Re: Re: She is not Indian

Is it? I never saw anywhere that Rahul and Priyanka are called as half
Italian, or Katrina Kaif as half British, or Jackie Shroff as half
Belgian (not sure if Belgium, but certainly some European country),
Omar Abdullah (Kashmir CM) as half British etc. There is a big list of
celebrities in India where the mother is not an Indian. None of them
are called 'Half Indians', although biologically they are. In India,
we consider only the origin of the father.
Indians have this craze of finding out these people of Indian origin
who achieve some success in some other country, and then trumpets it
around. An Indra Nooyi or an Amartya Sen is another matter, as they
are real Indian people, even if they have some other citizenship now.
But pls stop trumpeting these people who has a mother or father of
Indian origin born in another country, and who have no idea of what
India is.
Praise them for their achievements, not because of some Indian
connection they have.

What is your South Asian background?
My mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was born in Chennai (formerly
Madras), India. She was the daughter of a diplomat who traveled the
world as a government official and didn't think twice about sending
his 20 year-old daughter to America to pursue her passion and talent
for science, specifically endocrinology and the complex mechanisms of
cancer.
When I was a child, every two or three years we traveled to India to
visit my mother's family. My earliest memories are of walking along
the beach with my grandfather and his friends - retired public
servants who had spent their careers trying to make India a better
place.
My grandfather would talk to me about the importance of applying an
unflinching ethical lens to every single problem you face. He was
Joint Secretary for the Indian government, a post akin to our Deputy
Secretary of State, and he had numerous fascinating assignments,
including several years as an advisor to the government of Zambia in
Africa.

rediff u r such a nonsence, up to how long u publish this crap.
she is never called herself indian and u r beating the drum of indian

there r no provision of dual nationality in our constitution.
either american or indian.

Re: hahahahahah
by Ram Online on Jun 09, 2010 11:29 PM
Its nothing to do with her nationality. In US, its very common to
identify people with their ethnicity or roots. For eg: Obama is
identified as African American or Kenyan American. It does not mean he
has dual citizenship in Kenya or in any African country. You hear
words like Jewish American, Irish, Italian etc even though they never
had dual citizenship.
Fyi, rediff is read by Indian Americans in USA. This report is to
serve Indian Amricans. Of course Indians in India are proud to see the
success of Indian migrants and thier descandants. India will have
friends in America strenthn ties between two countries. India having
good ties and strong bond with world's only super power is a good
thing for India. It serves Indian interests well.

What Roots!!! Do you belive that Jay Leno is known at all in Italy
b'coz of his Italian roots. Let's cut the crap. Jewish is American is
known for its strong lobbying power. Italians are known for its
gangsters. African Americans are known for its crime/poverty. Indians
are known for its BPO jobs (nothing else). Pakistanis are known for
its Taliban links and so on.. So stop beating the drums about roots.
America is country dominated by 73% white.
Rest can go to hell..
Even the so called Indian Nikki Haley was abused (racial slur) along
with Prsident Obama by one of the GOP White candidate

Re: Re: hahahahahah
by Gopal Elayavalli on Jun 09, 2010 11:28 PM
Dear CM,
No offense. Just my 2 cents.
Achievements apart, lets get couple of facts clarified. She touted her
African American roots all along her Political campaign.
Look at her past relationship history and there will emerge a clearer
picture of how an intelligent lady is using the government machinery /
people for her rise on the political ladder.
Even in the S.Carolina where Niki Haley ( nee Nitu Randhawa ) is going
great guns, she would have been a non-starter had she not converted to
Christianity.
I have initially amazed at how organized institutions in America are.
Look thro it, they are probably more corrupt than the one's in India
and have intriguing terminology to label the same.
The clear difference : Aam / Aadmi is not put to difficulties for
petty things like birth / death certificates etc.

I agree. If Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are both considered
Indians because of birth and having an Indian father, then howcome
this dame is considered Indian American, she should be called African
American. She was not born in India, never LIVED in India, her father
was an African American. She should not be considered Indian American
at all. She is only involved as an Indian American activist because
she wants their loyal Democratic votes since most Indians vote for the
Democratic party. Please don't call her Indian.

Joint Secretary for the Indian government, a post akin to our Deputy
Secretary of State, and he had numerous fascinating assignments,
including several years as an advisor to the government of Zambia in
Africa.

rediff u r such a nonsence, up to how long u publish this crap.
she is never called herself indian and u r beating the drum of indian
american.
there r no provision of dual nationality in our constitution.
either american or indian.
go to hell

Even the so called Indian Nikki Haley was abused (racial slur) along
with Prsident Obama by one of the GOP White candidate

by definition, being born to an Indian parent makes her Indian
american ... it's doesn't matter if she has been to India or to Africa
or to Iraq or japan or newzealand

Dear CM,

Compared to that don't you think things are little better despite the

Re: Indian American
by Anwar Ali on Jun 09, 2010 10:29 PM

I adore his movies Vemana, Tyagaiah and others. He was an acting
legend and a great human being.
