Popat death setback for Sonawane case

Mumbai - Popat Shinde, the oil mafia leader and key accused in the
Yeshwant Sonawane torching case, on Monday succumbed to burn injures
that he had sustained during the gruesome attack on the Nashik
Additional District Collector at Panewadi in Nashik on last Tuesday.
In a development that is bound to affect the investigations into the
additional district collector's brazen murder near a dhaba at
Panewadi, Shinde, who had accidentally sustained 70 per cent burns
when he and his accomplices burnt Sonawane alive, died at the State-
run JJ Hospital here in the afternoon.
Shinde, who was found abandoned by his accomplices in a severely
burnt condition by the Manmad police near the crime site a few hours
after Sonawane was torched alive on the afternoon of January 25, was
first rushed to the Nashik district civil hospital, from where he was
shifted to the JJ Hospital on last Wednesday. Shinde had showed no
signs of recovery at the city hospital, where his condition remained
"critical".
Confirming Shinde's death, JJ Hospital's dean PP Lahane said that the
hospital would hand over the body to the Nashik police, after the
post-mortem.
Significantly enough, the Nashik police investigating the Sonawane
murder had not recorded Shinde's statement, before his death. "Though
the police did try to record Shinde's statement a few times, they did
not succeed as he was not in a position to speak," an official said.
The investigators' predicament should be seen in the light of the
fact that though they have arrested ten more persons, including
Shinde's two sons Kunal and Vikas, who were allegedly involved in the
Sonawane torching incident, they will not be able to unravel the
conspiracy behind the ghastly murder --- on whether it was
perpetrated on the spur of the moment or the crime was a premeditated
one and whether it was carried out at somebody else's behest.
As has been surmised by the police from the accounts of witnesses to
the incident, the chain of events that preceded Sonawane's murder
went along something like this: Seeing the theft of kerosene by oil
mafia members from a tanker and transferring it to another diesel
tanker parked there, Sonawane not only objected to their indulging in
the theft, but he also spoke to some people on his mobile and later
began shooting the incident using his mobile.
Meanwhile, the mafia gangsters called up Shinde, who was at other
some other spot, performing the tenth day ritual of his wife. On
arrival, Shinde initially had a verbal duel with Sonawane. Later, an
infuriated Shinde and his men reportedly doused Sonawane with
kerosene and burnt him alive.
However, there is no clarity on the circumstances leading to Shinde
catching fire while participating in the attack on Shinde. The
questions that remain unanswered are: how did kerosene spill on
Shinde's body? How did he catch fire and suffer so severe burn
wounds? Why did his accomplices, including his two sons, flee the
scene abandoning him in such a serious condition?
On their part, the investigators have not lent credence to the
allegations made by Shinde's sons Vikas and Kunal that their father
had fatally attacked Sonwane as the latter was demanding a bribe from
him and that their father had set himself on fire after torching the
additional district collector.
Given that the police did not record the statement of the key accused
before he died, it will be rather difficult to nail the big fish in
the oil mafia, be it gang lords themselves or the political bosses,
under whose directions Shinde was carrying out oil theft and
adulteration racket.
Considering that Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly
Eknath Khadse of the BJP has revealed that Shinde used to work in
tandem with an oil mafia, Prakash Jain, from Jalgaon and linked the
latter (Jain) to private secretary Ahirwar of State Food and Civil
Supplies Minister Anil Deshmukh, it remains to be seen if the DF
Government will pursue new leads provided by Khadse.
