Maharashtra politico's daughter under lens for dodging duty
By Pradeep Thakur, TNN

Indraprasth aka New Delhi - The daughter of a senior UPA minister
from Maharashtra may be quizzed by the Directorate of Revenue
Intelligence (DRI) for possessing three foreign cars imported on fake
invoices to evade customs duty. She would be the first among several
high-profile politicians who are likely to face investigation in the
case.
The three cars in question -- an Audi, a Porsche and a BMW -- have
been bought using the services of Sumit Walia, who was earlier
arrested by the agency on charges of importing pre-registered cars
from the UK on fake invoices to evade duties.
The move to question the Maharashtra strongman's daughter for
suspected duty evasion and fraudulent imports is part of a drive that
the revenue intelligence agency has initiated against the use of
black money in foreign trade. The DRI has gathered that many of
Walia's high-profile clients had bought cars using accounts of
others, leading the agency to suspect the use of black money in these
deals.
The DRI is engaged in a crackdown against high net worth individuals
who allegedly use their unaccounted for wealth to import luxury cars.
It has blown the lid off a racket where hundreds of cars were
imported in the past few years using fake invoices.
Walia, currently on bail, has been questioned several times in the
past. Agency sources claim he is not cooperating. Many of his clients
are well-connected politicians, cricketers and film stars.
"Investigations are at a crucial stage, and all those who are
involved will be questioned," said R K Sharma, DRI Delhi zone chief.
"Those who have imported these cars by misrepresenting facts should
pay duties," he said, adding that more people would be called for
questioning in coming weeks.
The DRI is also in touch with the foreign office seeking inputs from
the UK as it suspects that many of these cars were registered there
before being brought to India. These high net worth individuals are
accused of faking import papers and buying pre-owned stolen cars.
Though the actual number of such cars is yet to be ascertained, the
count could go up to 100.
In the past two months, DRI sleuths have seized at least 45 high-end
vehicles, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces, Hummers,
Aston Martins, Porsches and Bentleys, that are registered in the name
of India's who's who. The seized luxury sedans were imported mainly
from the UK, and some from Dubai.
