Nalini's cell phone in prison cell and calls made to London/Canada: CBI
inquiry demanded by Dr. Swamy
Phone seized from Nalini's cell, calls made to London, Canada
A Subramani & A Selvaraj, Apr 21, 2010, 12.16am IST
Chennai: In a development that could shatter Nalini Sriharan's claim
to unblemished prison conduct for the past 19 years, Vellore jail
authorities recovered a mobile phone from her possession and found
that she had made calls to Canada and London.
Nalini's daughter Meghara is in London with her paternal uncle's
family. She is said to be preparing to join a medical course this
year. Hours after the jail authorities released information about the
seizure from Nalini's cell, the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case
convict's counsel, P Pugalenthi, circulated copies of a letter Nalini
had written to the additional director-general of police (prisons) on
April 6. The letter talks about harassment and torture at the hands
of prison authorities, and says she never attempted to go against
jail rules. Noting that she never attempted to bribe prison personnel
to enjoy facilities not permitted legally, Nalini said she as well as
her visitors were being subjected to humiliation and intimidation.
"In these 19 years, no banned material was found on either me or my
visitors. But the excesses committed by prison personnel are crossing
all limits. This place would be better described as a grave than as a
prison for women," she said. "I adhere to jail rules, and I am not
addicted to any bad habits. Because I don't bribe prison personnel I
suffer a lot." Earlier in the day, prison officials said they were
keeping a watch on her. "The instrument was seized from her
possession at 6.30 am on Tuesday. The number has apparently been
obtained in Chennai. We are scanning the call and SMS details on the
handset," a jail official said.
Confirming the seizure, ADGP (prisons) K R Shyam Sundar said:
"Following a tip-off, we monitored Nalini's cell in Vellore for more
than three days. On Tuesday morning, teams raided her cell. They
recovered a new Nokia mobile phone and it was switched on and
active."

Swamy seeks CBI probe
Special Correspondent, The Hindu, April 20, 2010
Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said in a statement that
"the discovery of a mobile phone with a GPRS global roaming SIM card
in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination conspirator Ms. Nalini's prison cell
in the high security Vellore jail indicates the porous and tattered
state of India's anti-terror security infrastructure."
He demanded a full CBI inquiry into the discovery, and making public
the telephone records of all calls made to and from this mobile
phone, the owner of the SIM card, and the jail authorities' alleged
connivance in it.
"India," observed Dr. Swamy in his statement, "has suffered at the
hands of the terrorists because those highly placed in Indian public
life have been politically promiscuous in relating to terrorists.
Nalini, Prabakaran's mother, etc. are all part of the rump LTTE plot
to re-group in India. Hence, it is time to crack down on all these
anti-national activities."

Jail authorities recover "Cell Phone" from Nalini - The Life Convict
in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination
Wed, 2010-04-21 01:38 - editor
Sathyalaya Ramakrishnan reporting from Chennai
Chennai, 21 April, (Asiantribune.com):
Nalini - a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination cas Vellore
high security Women Prison authorities have recovered a sophisticated
cell phone from Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi
assassination case in a routine check.
A routine check was conducted on Tuesday morning under jail
Superintendent Rajalakshmi and officials recovered the mobile phone
from Nalini. This was disclosed by Director General (Prisons) ADGP K
R Shyamsunder.
The phone was "active" at the time when it was being recovered and
authorities are going into the details of call records, he said.
After further investigation, jail authorities would decide on action
against Nalini with regard to "violation of prison rules," Mr.
Shyamsunder said.
Nalini, serving a life term in the high-security special prison at
Vellore, had recently appealed in the Madras High Court seeking
premature release which the court had declined on different grounds
including gravity of the crime.
A division bench of the Madras High court had rejected her petition
on April 6 observing that the 44-year-old Nalini had committed the
crime in a cunning and meticulous manner which killed the former
prime minister in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.
Nalini, the life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, who
is also fighting a legal battle for her premature release, suffered a
serious set back with prison authorities seizing an active mobile
phone from her possession, an offence under the Prison's Act.
"Further investigation is on about the nature of calls made or
received from the phone. It is a contraband item. We will take action
as per the prison manual rules", Mr Shyamsunder told 'Asian Tribune'.
Asked whether any case has been registered against the convict, he
said "there are enough powers within the prison manual to deal with
possession of such contraband items. "We are probing the matter and
appropriate action will be taken" he added.
The seizure comes at a time when Nalini had been claiming that she
had a clean record in the prison and her "good conduct" could be
considered for deciding her plea for early release. Nalini filed a
yet another petition in the Madras High Court, challenging the order
of the state government in which her premature plea was rejected.
